How to draw a trendline and get alerted when price crosses it

A fixed price alert cannot follow a sloping trendline: the level you need changes every day. This guide covers drawing useful trendlines and turning them into alerts that move with the line.

Drawing a trendline that means something

  • Connect at least two clear swing points: lows for a rising trendline, highs for a falling one. A third touch makes the line much more convincing.
  • Use the timeframe you trade on. A line drawn on the daily chart is watched by far more traders than one drawn on a 5-minute chart.
  • Do not force it. If the line has to cut through many candles to fit, it is not a line the market respects.

A horizontal level marks support or resistance at one price. A channel pairs two levels with price between them; a channel alert tells you when price moves into or out of it.

Why a price alert is not enough

A rising trendline that is at 60,000 today might be at 61,500 in a week. A price alert at 60,000 is right today and wrong tomorrow, and you would have to edit it every day. An alert attached to the line itself follows its slope.

Turning the line into an alert

  1. Open the chart and draw the trendline or horizontal level with the drawing tools.
  2. Extend the line forward in time. The alert stays active until the end of the line you drew, so a line that ends today stops being watched today.
  3. Click the bell on the line.
  4. Choose the trigger: crosses up (a close above the line), crosses down (a close below it) or either direction.
  5. Save. The line is watched at the close of each candle on that chart's timeframe, and the message arrives on Telegram when price crosses it.

Which trigger to choose

  • Breakout of resistance or a falling trendline: crosses up.
  • Breakdown of support or a rising trendline: crosses down.
  • Either direction: when you only need to know that price has left a range, or for a channel boundary you have not made up your mind about.

A cross is judged on the candle's close, not on a wick that pokes through and comes back. That removes many false breakouts, but it also means the alert comes at the close of the candle, not the moment the line is first touched.

Things to keep in mind

  • An alert is attached to its drawing. Deleting the drawing stops the alert watching it.
  • Lines are judged on candle closes, so the timeframe of the chart you drew on matters.
  • For a level combined with indicators, such as a breakout with RSI above 50, build the condition in the alert builder.

Questions

Do I have to move the alert as the trendline slopes?

No. The alert follows the line you drew, until the line ends.

Does a wick through the line trigger the alert?

No. Crosses are judged on the candle close.

Can I alert on a horizontal support or resistance level?

Yes. Draw a horizontal level and click its bell; it works like a price-level alert you can see on the chart.

Set this up as an alert

Build it once in the alert builder. It is checked when each candle closes, and the message arrives on Telegram.
